President Mohammad Buhari has ordered that no user should be blocked from the networks of telecom operators till February 9, 2021. As customers demand further expansion.

Subscribers, who appeal for further extension, would have had their lines blocked January 19, being the initial deadline for them to link their SIMs to their National Identity Number, NIN.

The federal government, on December 15, 2020, announced that after December 30, 2020, all SIMs that were not registered with the valid NINs on the telecommunications companies' network would be blocked.

It later extended the deadline after widespread opposition to the first announcement, extending the three-week period for subscribers with NIN from December 30, 2020, to January 19, 2021.

Also, it extended the six-week deadline for users without NIN from December 30, 2020 to 9th of February 2021.

However, before the January deadline, many telephone users and organizations demanded that the NIN registration process be extended further or suspended altogether due to the large number of people who still remain and can't get their NIN yet.

At the end of the January 19 deadline, Nigerians went into a state of panic, following repeated statements by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Ibrahim Pentami, that those who do not meet the deadline will be blocked.

Yesterday, the federal govt. responded to the cries of the people by suspending the January 19, 2021 deadline for defaulters.

A statement from the Association of Nigerian ALTON Licensed Telecommunication Operators, available to Phgurus, confirmed that it was now official that no one would be barred from the networks until February 9, 2021.

The statement was signed by the Chairman Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary Damian Udeh. Also, said ALTON can confirm from our members that we have received a formal confirmation from the Communications Commission of Nigeria (NCC), that the president has agreed to extend the deadline for users with NIN.

The deadline has been extended so that they can be able to link their SIM registration data from January 19 to February 9, 2021.

We thank the President for giving us more time to carry out this important task of building a credible national identity database for the country. Also, we thank the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy,

Dr. Isa Ibrahim Ali Pantami, for his allegiance to enabling the digital economy.

"ALTON" also use the opportunity to charge all Telecommunications users who have a NIN, to link it to their SIMs through the available channels as soon as possible, so that they can use the extension period properly.

Meanwhile, many users who spoke to Phgurus immediately after the announcement praised the president but noted that even on February 9, 2021, a large number of Nigerians will not have much time to meet the deadline because, more number of overcrowded NIMC centers has yet to improve.
